Match Reports
Chicken Inn FC's hopes of securing a valuable away result were dashed in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon after Ngezi Platinum Stars claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory in an entertaining Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Matchday 21 encounter at Baobab Stadium.
Having travelled to Mhondoro looking to build on the encouraging signs shown in recent weeks, the Gamecocks produced a spirited performance and twice found their way back into the contest. However, defensive lapses at crucial moments ultimately proved costly as Ngezi collected all three points in front of their home supporters.
As anticipated before kick-off, the fixture lived up to its billing with both sides producing an open and competitive contest from the opening whistle.
Chicken Inn, wearing their traditional gold and black colours, handed midfielder Junior Makunike his first start for the club, while Sefu Louison also continued to settle into the side.
The visitors started brightly and nearly opened the scoring inside two minutes. Donovan Bernard was first called into action before Chicken Inn quickly launched a counterattack. Brian Charamba delivered an inviting cross towards Hute inside the penalty area, but Ngezi managed to clear the danger before the striker could apply the finishing touch.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the eighth minute following an excellent attacking move.
A clever piece of play from Majika released Innocent, whose powerful effort was spilled by the Ngezi goalkeeper. Charamba reacted quickest inside the six-yard box to calmly tap home the rebound and hand Chicken Inn a deserved 1-0 advantage.
The goal sparked an immediate response from the hosts, who began committing numbers forward in search of an equaliser.
Sefu produced several important defensive interventions while Charamba tracked back tirelessly to support the defence. Donovan Bernard was also forced into action, producing an outstanding one-on-one save after a lapse in concentration at the back threatened to gift Ngezi a quick equaliser.
The pressure continued to mount as Ngezi repeatedly tested the Chicken Inn defence with long balls, crosses and sustained attacking waves.
Chicken Inn survived several anxious moments, including a dangerous attack where Donovan was beaten to the ball before the effort drifted narrowly wide of the upright.
Despite soaking up long periods of pressure, the visitors continued to threaten on the counterattack through the lively combination of Innocent, Majika and Charamba.
Ngezi's persistence eventually paid off midway through the first half.
After winning a dangerous free-kick just outside the penalty area, the hosts saw the delivery take an awkward deflection that unsettled the Chicken Inn defence. Moments later another sustained attack finally produced the equaliser as Ngezi found the back of the net to level matters at 1-1 after 26 minutes.
Chicken Inn responded positively.
Charamba led another dangerous attack before winning a corner, while Itai's effort from the resulting set-piece drifted wide.
Majika then came agonisingly close to restoring the visitors' lead with a superb effort brilliantly tipped away by the Ngezi goalkeeper. Charamba's rebound was blocked before Hute fired the follow-up wide in one of Chicken Inn's best passages of attacking football during the opening half.
However, just as it appeared the teams would head into the interval level, disaster struck for the visitors.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, a defensive mistake allowed an unmarked Ngezi player to meet a well-delivered corner and head home, giving the hosts a crucial 2-1 advantage moments before the referee signalled for half-time.
Chicken Inn returned for the second period determined to find a way back into the contest.
Makunike continued to impress in midfield before being brought down, earning his side a free-kick. Shortly afterwards, head coach Tonderai Ndiraya made attacking changes, introducing Tyrese and Hapmo as the visitors searched for greater attacking urgency.
The visitors continued to push forward despite Ngezi disrupting their rhythm with aggressive pressing.
Innocent remained a constant threat down the left wing, producing several dangerous runs that troubled the home defence. Binwell was introduced to add fresh legs in attack, while Majika and Charamba continued searching for openings.
Chicken Inn thought they had created the perfect opportunity midway through the second half when Innocent beat his marker brilliantly before delivering an inviting cross across the face of goal. Unfortunately for the visitors, Binwell was unable to apply the finishing touch.
The pressure finally told in the 79th minute.
George delivered an excellent free-kick into the penalty area where Itai redirected the ball into a dangerous position for Hapmo, who rose highest to head home a deserved equaliser and make it 2-2, sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters.
Yet Chicken Inn's joy lasted barely a minute.
Straight from the restart, poor defending allowed Ngezi to regain possession in a dangerous area before the hosts restored their lead almost immediately, punishing the visitors' failure to clear their lines to make it 3-2.
It proved to be the decisive moment of the afternoon.
Chicken Inn continued to fight until the final whistle.
Long balls from Mpumelelo searched for Binwell, while Innocent and Hapmo continued asking questions of the Ngezi defence. Lynoth was introduced late on as Ndiraya made one final attempt to rescue a point.
Four minutes of added time offered one last opportunity, but Ngezi managed the closing stages professionally, slowing the game down whenever possible before maintaining possession in the final seconds.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-2 victory for Ngezi Platinum Stars.
Although Chicken Inn left Baobab Stadium empty-handed, there were encouraging performances to take from the contest. Charamba was influential with a goal and tireless work rate, Innocent consistently threatened from wide areas, Hapmo made an immediate impact from the bench with his goal, while Makunike impressed on his full debut before making way in the second half.
For Chicken Inn, attention now turns to their next league assignment as they look to bounce back quickly and convert another encouraging display into valuable points.
