Chicken Inn’s Munhumutapa Cup Run Ends in Penalty Shootout

Chicken Inn put up a determined performance against Ngezi Platinum Stars at Luveve Stadium on Sunday, but their run in the inaugural ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup came to an end after the visitors prevailed 5-4 on penalties following a goalless draw in normal time.

The Gamecocks competed strongly throughout the match and managed to keep Ngezi, one of the leading sides in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, from finding the back of the net. Despite creating opportunities of their own, Chicken Inn were unable to find the decisive goal, leaving the tie to be settled from the penalty spot after 90 minutes of action.

The encounter was the third meeting between the two teams this season, with Chicken Inn still searching for their first victory over Ngezi. Their previous two league meetings produced a goalless draw and a 3-2 victory for Ngezi, meaning Sunday's cup clash once again demonstrated how closely matched the two sides have been.

Chicken Inn started the afternoon in their black and red colours, while Ngezi arrived in an all-white strip. The hosts made an encouraging start and looked to put pressure on their opponents from the opening minutes, with Innocent providing an early threat after making a good run before testing the Ngezi goalkeeper from an acute angle. The effort was punched away for a corner, although the resulting set-piece failed to produce a clear opportunity.

The Gamecocks continued to build attacks as Taimon, Mpumelelo and Mabunu combined well in midfield before finding Majika. The midfielder looked to release Innocent, who showed good individual skill to beat a defender before his shot was blocked by the Ngezi defence. Majika was particularly influential during the first half and produced another excellent piece of skill around the 19th minute when he beat two Ngezi players before getting a shot away. The Ngezi goalkeeper was well positioned and managed to deal with the effort. Soon afterwards, Majika again became involved in the attack, finding Innocent with a well-timed pass. The forward made a dangerous run and used several stepovers before being brought down from behind, giving Chicken Inn a free-kick.

Charamba and Majika stood over the set-piece, but the first effort came off the wall. Majika reacted quickly to the rebound and fired another shot, which took a deflection and resulted in a corner. Ngezi managed to clear the delivery as the visitors continued to absorb the pressure from the home side.

Young Gary, making his first start, also impressed in the middle of the park as Chicken Inn battled for control. Ngezi attempted to launch a counter-attack down the right, but Tyrese Hikupembe tracked the move well and ensured the ball went out for a Chicken Inn goal kick. Neither team could find the breakthrough before halftime, with the score remaining 0-0 at the interval.

Chicken Inn returned for the second half with the same determination, although Ngezi began to enjoy more possession and looked to put the hosts under pressure. Innocent showed good movement early in the half, but his touch was too heavy and allowed Ngezi to regain possession. The visitors then won a free-kick and sent a long delivery into the Chicken Inn penalty area, but the Gamecocks defended well and allowed the ball to run out for a goal kick.

Itai was shown a yellow card in the 55th minute following a rough challenge, with Ngezi awarded a free-kick. Itai quickly made up for the foul by clearing the resulting danger as the visitors earned a corner, which Chicken Inn subsequently dealt with.

The Gamecocks made their first change in the 60th minute when Majika was replaced by Hapmo as the hosts looked to introduce fresh energy into their attacking play. Ngezi responded with a spell of good football and came close to breaking the deadlock after a lapse in concentration created a promising opening. The Gamecocks were forced into another change when Innocent was unable to continue because of injury, with Hute coming on in the 83rd minute. The substitute made an immediate impression with a good first touch before quickly getting an effort away, although the shot went wide and resulted in a Ngezi goal kick.

Neither side could find the breakthrough during the remaining minutes, and the referee eventually brought normal time to an end with the match still locked at 0-0. With the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup tie unable to produce a winner after 90 minutes, the teams went straight into a penalty shootout to decide who would progress.

Ngezi took the first penalty and converted, but Chicken Inn responded through Lynoth Chikuhwa, who calmly scored to make it 1-1. Tyrese then stepped up for the Gamecocks' second attempt and found the net, keeping the shootout level at 2-2. Itai followed with another successful penalty for Chicken Inn before Sefu Louison confidently converted the fourth, leaving the score at 4-4 after the first four Chicken Inn attempts.

The pressure then shifted to the fifth penalties. Ngezi successfully converted their final attempt to move 5-4 ahead, leaving Chicken Inn needing to respond. The Gamecocks could not find the required equaliser, allowing Ngezi to win the shootout and book their place in the next round of the competition.

Although the result ended Chicken Inn's involvement in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, the Gamecocks can take positives from a performance in which they matched Ngezi for long periods and prevented the visitors from scoring during normal time. The hosts also created several promising opportunities, particularly through Majika and Innocent in the first half, while the defensive unit remained organised for much of the contest.

The result means Chicken Inn have now gone three matches against Ngezi this season without a victory, with the three encounters producing two draws and one defeat. However, the narrow margins in Sunday's match and the earlier goalless league meeting underline how competitive the fixture has been, with Chicken Inn continuing to push Ngezi hard whenever the two sides meet.

For Ngezi, the penalty shootout victory keeps their hopes of winning the historic first edition of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup alive. For Chicken Inn, attention now turns back to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, and the Chibuku Super Cup, where the Gamecocks will look to carry the positive aspects of Sunday’s performance into their remaining fixtures.

The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup may have ended for Chicken Inn, but their performance at Luveve showed plenty of fight and competitiveness. Against a team currently occupying a higher position in the Premier Soccer League, the Gamecocks stayed in the contest until the final kick and were ultimately separated from their opponents only by the penalty shootout.
