Matchday: Chicken Inn Ready to Ruffle Feathers in Bulawayo Derby

The wait is over.

Today, the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League returns to Barbourfields Stadium for another chapter of the Bulawayo Derby, with Chicken Inn FC facing Highlanders in a crucial league encounter.

Kick-off is at 3:00pm.

Just three days after the two sides battled to a goalless draw in the Chibuku Super Cup, the Gamecocks and Bosso meet again — but this time, the stakes are different.

There is no cup shootout waiting at the end.

There is no second chance.

There are three valuable league points on the line.

For Chicken Inn, this is an opportunity to respond.

The Gamecocks were competitive in Sunday's derby, holding Highlanders to 0-0 despite playing the closing stages with 10 men after Tyrese was sent off. Highlanders eventually won 3-1 on penalties to advance in the Chibuku Super Cup, but Chicken Inn showed the organisation, discipline and fighting spirit needed to compete with their city rivals.

Today, the focus shifts completely to the league.

Chicken Inn will be determined to turn that performance into a result and, perhaps more importantly, answer the 3-1 defeat suffered against Highlanders in the first league meeting of the season on April 22.

The numbers make this a fascinating derby.

Chicken Inn have 33 points from 25 matches, while Highlanders have 37 points from 25 games. Four points separate the two sides, meaning a victory for the Gamecocks would significantly close the gap.

Recent history also suggests that another tight contest is in store.

In the last 10 meetings supplied, the teams have recorded two victories each, while six matches have ended in draws.

Chicken Inn's wins during that period include a 2-1 victory over Highlanders on April 21, 2024, and a 2-0 triumph on September 3, 2023.

There have also been four other draws in those 10 league meetings: 1-1 on November 23, 2025; 0-0 on June 22, 2025; 0-0 on August 25, 2024; and 0-0 on April 7, 2023.

The latest meeting added another goalless draw before Highlanders prevailed on penalties.

So, once again, everything points towards another fiercely contested Bulawayo Derby.

For coach Tonderayi Ndiraya, today's match is another chance for his players to demonstrate the improvement he saw in Sunday's performance.

The Chicken Inn coach admitted after the cup defeat that his team needed greater cutting edge and more commitment in attacking transitions.

Those lessons will be put to the test this afternoon.

The Gamecocks have already shown this season that they can win difficult league matches, recording victories over Manica, Hunters and TelOne.

Now they need another big performance.

And there is perhaps no better occasion for it than a Bulawayo Derby.

The supporters will be expecting intensity, discipline, courage and attacking purpose from the opening whistle.

The players know what is at stake.

The technical team knows what is at stake.

And the Gamecocks faithful know what is at stake.
